Sunrise Beach
the best dive in Seattle Tacoma area?

Located near Gig Harbor, Sunrise Beach has been a favorite dive site for the Aquarox dive club. Since the inception of the club, March of this year, we have planned and dove the site on average once a month. What makes Sunrise Beach such a popular site? Simple, no matter what your skill level you can almost be guaranteed to see a number of wolf eels as well as giant octopi.

One such dive was scheduled for a Sunday in August on a low tidal exchange day. Our group consisted of ten divers each of us with varying levels of skill and confidence. As we entered the water during a slack flood, I looked up and caught a glimpse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge off in the distance basking in the morning sun.

My buddy was Ethan Janson, a fellow club member and underwater photographer. Our plan was to lure out and photograph some wolf eels. We found the rocky wall with little effort and in no time we were upon a juvenile wolf eel. Being about three feet long and free swimming, this "little guy" was not afraid of us at all. I found a scallop and broke it open and the little guy made off like a bandit. All the while Ethan was taking pictures. We made our way from south to north along the rocky wall peering and looking in all the crevasses. We did see some sculpins blending in with the rocks and an occasional ratfish. Once again we found an adult wolf eel with its "old man" like face peering out from the rocks. I preceded to lure it out with a broken up green urchin, but with marginal success. To my surprise the juvenile eel was almost head long in my goodie bag looking for more grub. This was amazing, I had never seen such a docile and fearless underwater creature. The eel followed us for most of the dive. We saw a total of three octopi wedged comfortably in between some rocky crevasses. This was trully a great dive.

Northwest Shore Dives by Stephen Fischnaller has a well written description of the site and directions to the park. I must warn you that the hill down to the beach is kind on the way down, but definitely challenging for those of us in less than good shape on the way up. When diving Sunrise Beach plan carefully because the current can be very strong. If you live in the Seattle area and are looking for a dive buddy, come join the Aquarox Dive Club. Membership is free at this time. The dive club meets the first Tuesday of each month at the Freemont Library at 7:00 p.m. We get air for the dives courtesy of Discount Diver's Supply.
